Back in Exile I have damaged the calm to be ravaged by the wind How do you reconcile a heart that’s been torn from the limb You carry the weight of the world that first led you to sin Back in exile Back in exile Back in exile Once again I’ve been trading in lies waiting for truth to begin I have strayed here outside from what rages within you welcome the darkness the same as you welcome a friend Is there no place to hide for a man in demise? Is there no way to light or to turn back this tide? you find yourself in that place but you don’t comprehend

cassandra 04:27
Cassandra I finally make my way from East to West To wind up in this fallen angel’s nest The words and wine flow feely here for all till you can’t hear the sound of the sirens call So tell me what are you gonna do Cassandra Your captain has departed once again Everybody’s starting to look your way Tell me now you’ve got some kind of plan The books upon your self are most impressive Your table offers quite the local feast But inside these rooms of light the past is burning and winter time still follows summer’s breeze Chorus: So tell me what are you gonna do Cassandra This place has always had a stronger hand Everybody’s starting to look my way Tell me now there’s always been a plan I thanked you for the help you gave in passing The last time that I came upon your door I surely would be leaving but for the crashing And this country sure gets dark before the dawn Chorus: I remember the days of wine and roses And the times I used to crawl here just for you But tell me what are you gonna do Cassandra You’ve left me waiting here without a clue But tell me what are you gonna do Cassandra Everybody’s turned the other way But tell me what are we gonna do Cassandra Maybe we can make our get away

turned away 03:19
worn out and haggard tempted and tried and betrayed passed through your garden waited outside by your gate i burned with fever and i couldn't stay i saw your light shine but i turned away tramped through your kingdom traveled by night, slept by night toiled in your vineyard waited in line for my pay i met a stranger and looked in his face i felt no danger but i turned away

broken light 03:51
When you walked in the room They all turned their head Everyone held their breath As the sky settled down In the arms of the night In that bittersweet time Let there be broken light After the dark of night Now the highway feels dead There’s no one heading west Everyone’s gone ahead Through the shadows and dust Past the fire and flood That we all rise above (Chorus) Oh say could you see at the dawn of the day did we all find our way ? to a radiant place where the music does play like the warmth of embrace

meridian 03:00
Oh meridian it is time you realized I’ve been heading towards you trying to find my refuge seeking shelter from this wind meridian come another day I could be your favored one something’s been delivered something so familiar like a tattoo on my skin meridian Don’t turn your back on me now my destination won’t be turned around Send me on my way I will be there in my mind like a Sunday driver I will try to find her I am waiting to begin Meridian

let me in 02:37
WON’T YOU LET ME IN BEEN OUT HERE DRIVING THE WIND AND SNOW AND RAIN AND MY FUEL IS LOW AND I TRIED TO SIGNAL BUT I JUST CAN’T CHANGE MY LANE TILL YOU LET ME IN WON’T YOU CALL MY NAME JUST SAY YOU WANT ME THERE AND THERE I’LL BE IF IT’S ALL THE SAME JUST OPEN UP AND THROW ME DOWN THE KEY AND JUST LET ME IN WORN DOWN AND RAGGED DRIVEN AND DRY AND DRAINED DOWN RIGHT DEJECTED DOWN ON MY KNEES TO PRAY THAT IT’S NOT TOO LATE WON’T YOU LET ME IN WELL I’M STANDING OUTSIDE AND I’M CAUGHT IN THE LIGHT OF DAY I KNOW WHERE I’VE BEEN I GOT HALF A MIND TO NEVER GO BACK AGAIN IF YOU LET ME IN

The Lucky One I guess that I’m The Lucky One Silver and gold to spare jack of all hearts master of none you’ll find me everywhere Another Town Another Night Another place to play I’ll come inside Till morning light Then I’ll be on my way There’s those that say I’ve lost my way I need to find the light But I can see As well as them My path is clear and bright Trouble has been My middle name But luck’s been on my side The winding way Has been my fate So I just take the ride Yeah I just take the ride I guess that I’m the lucky one….

passionbroke 05:32
PASSIONBROKE H.C. Meehan/ M. Meehan She was a raven-haired beauty Stepped into my world Of all the things I’d seen coming I had not seen this girl Used to throw my love around Not hold nobody close She just seemed like something When I was passion broke I had walls around me Kept everybody out She just tore ‘em down And took them for herself (chorus) Time take these visions Carry them from me I’ll cry for them, I’ll mourn for them And then I’ll be free I had hid away my heart My most precious gift She just tore it out And vanished in the mist

about

Artist: Hombre Jones
Title: Back in Exile
Reviewed by Andrew Greenhalgh

Alternative country, or alt country as it’s more affectionately known, is one of those genres of music that’s somewhat difficult to pin down. While it’s not quite country, it’s not quite rock ‘n roll either, finding its niche somewhere nebulous in between. And while the style encompasses artists as diverse as Son Volt, Lucinda Williams, and Mary Gauthier, the sound that East Coast collective Hombre Jones comprise on their latest recording, Back in Exile, is somewhat emblematic of the broad scope of sound.
Hombre Jones finds itself led primarily by singer, songwriter, and bass player Michael Meehan. Meehan’s roots go deep, having co-founded the Last Hombres whose credits boast an album produced by none other than Levon Helm. Meehan then went on to feature in the band Fourteen Feet before coming to rest his own laurels with Hombre Jones. To hear the band describe Back in Exile, the album stands “as a kind of anti-valentine, a collection of alt. country songs of broken love, isolation and acceptance.”
And that’s just what this record brings.

Hombre Jones and Back in Exile are alt country, through and through. From their eclectic mix of sounds and heartfelt yet introspective lyrics, the collective finds some strong footholds musically to stand upon. And while some may not always cotton to Meehan’s vocals as they weave in and out of the soundscape, the music that Hombre Jones puts together is the real deal.
